The protocol to offer instead of offered, or None to keep the offer.
An explicit offer containing required remains unchanged, including its order and
other protocols. A missing, empty or conflicting offer is replaced by required; the
consumer still checks the protocol selected by the peer after the handshake.
Connector defaults are not explicit offers and should be passed as None.
